TikTok Shop Accounting: How to Book TikTok Shop Payouts

Why TikTok Shop Needs Its Own Accounting Approach

TikTok Shop launched in the US in September 2023 and grew faster than any marketplace in e-commerce history. By 2025, hundreds of thousands of sellers are processing payouts through TikTok Shop — but the accounting infrastructure for these payouts is still catching up.

TikTok Shop is different from Amazon or Shopify in ways that matter for bookkeepers:

  1. Creator affiliate commissions — a significant portion of TikTok Shop sales come through TikTok affiliate creators who earn a commission. These commissions are deducted from your payout and need their own expense account.
  2. Platform commission fees that vary by product category (not a flat rate)
  3. Sample and creator program fees — TikTok may deduct costs for the sample product you sent to a creator
  4. Live stream vs. in-feed sales — both flow through the same payout but may need separate revenue tracking for performance analysis

Getting these right from the start prevents messy corrections when tax time arrives.

TikTok Shop pays sellers on a rolling basis (typically 2 business days after order delivery confirmation). You can download a payout detail report from the TikTok Seller Center. The key columns:

Column Description
Order ID Unique order identifier
Order Date Date of purchase
Settlement Date Date included in this payout
Product Revenue Customer payment for the product
Shipping Fee Collected Shipping charged to buyer
Platform Commission TikTok's fee (varies 2%–8% by category)
Affiliate Commission Creator commission (if applicable)
Sample Fee Cost deducted for influencer samples
Refund Amount Refunds issued in this period
Adjustment TikTok promotional credits, corrections
Net Settlement What you receive

The relationship: Net Settlement = Product Revenue + Shipping Collected − Platform Commission − Affiliate Commission − Sample Fee − Refunds + Adjustments

Understanding TikTok's Fee Structure

Platform Commission

TikTok charges a percentage of the sale price, varying by product category: - General merchandise: ~5–6% - Electronics: ~3% - Beauty: ~6–8% - Food & grocery: ~5%

This is comparable to Amazon's referral fee structure — a variable rate by category.

Affiliate Creator Commissions

When a TikTok creator promotes your product through the TikTok affiliate program and drives a sale, the creator earns a commission you set (typically 5–20%). TikTok deducts this from your payout and distributes it to the creator.

From an accounting perspective, affiliate commissions are an advertising or sales commission expense — not a marketplace fee. They should be tracked in a separate account from platform fees because: - They're discretionary (you set the commission rate) - They're performance-based (only paid on actual sales) - They're economically equivalent to influencer marketing spend

Promotional Adjustments

TikTok runs platform-wide promotions (Big Sale events, category discounts) where TikTok subsidizes part of the discount. These appear as positive adjustments — essentially a marketing credit from TikTok. Record these as Other Income or reduce your marketing expense, depending on how your client structures it.

  3. Select the settlement period

Importing into Your Accounting Software

QuickBooks Online

Create the journal entry manually using the template above, or use SettleBooks when TikTok Shop parser support launches. Map platform commissions to a dedicated expense account (not lumped with Amazon fees) to keep your channel comparisons clean.

Xero

In Xero, set up separate tracking categories for each sales channel if you want per-channel P&L reporting. TikTok Shop should have its own category, separate from your Shopify and Amazon channels.

Sage

Use the journal entry template above to post through Transactions > Journal Entries. TikTok commission categories map to existing expense nominal codes.

Edge Cases

Affiliate-Driven vs. Organic Sales

If you want to measure the true profitability of your affiliate program, separate affiliate-driven sales revenue from organic sales. The payout CSV includes affiliate order IDs — you can filter and sum separately before building the journal entry.

Bundle Orders

TikTok Shop supports product bundles. The payout shows the bundle price, not the individual item prices. If bundle components have different COGS, you may need to manually allocate cost. This is primarily a COGS issue, not a revenue recognition issue.

Multi-Currency (Canada, UK)

TikTok Shop UK (GBP) and Canada (CAD) operate as separate seller accounts. If your client sells in multiple regions, each has its own payout and you'll need to handle currency conversion when posting to a USD base currency.
